Fiumedinisi- Water: 18 Days to Christmas 2023

Nestled in the mountains near Ali Terme is the town of Fiumedinisi. This was the centerpoint of our vacation since it’s where my mother in law’s family is from. You will notice I’ll have multiple entries about Fiumedinisi. It may be a small town to most, but it is a pivotal location in our family history.

I am focusing an entire post on water. Seems a bit silly, but water is necessary for all humans, animals, and plants. Through the town of Fiumedinisi, there are a couple of natural spring water fountains that come from the mountains. Not only are there fountains for people to drink from…

… there is also a fountain for animals, especially donkeys, to drink from. No, I don’t think there are many donkeys around nowadays (i did see a dog drinking from it) , but these water systems were created a long time ago, and the animals were provided for as well.

Some houses located on the mountains have irrigation basins called gebbia’s which gather and hold water, then slowly distribute the water to the orchards throughout the dry season.

I just had to include this censored photo of my son because it cracks me up. He was being testy about putting his clothes on after a swim in the river, so I left him in his pull-up. We had to try his great-Nonno’s favorite water fountain in the corner of a mountain road, and obviously, I needed a photo of the special occasion.

Today’s Fortnum and Mason tea is Apricot, Honey and Lavender. This sweet fruity and floral tea is delicious. It’s made with Fortnum’s wildflower Salisbury Plain honey. The ending note of lavender is a lovely calming finish.

Happy 18 days until Christmas!
