Syracuse- Neapolis Archaeological Park: 9 Days to Christmas 2023

My biggest goal of the whole trip was to visit one of Sicily’s Greek amphitheaters… and taste wine grown in the foothills of Mt.Etna, which happened, and it was delicious!

We walked to the Neapolis Archaeological Park from Ortigia, and it is a lot farther away than Rick Steve’s book suggests. Regardless, we purchased our tickets and crossed the road to go into the park.

We first came across the quarry where rock was taken to build the amphitheaters and alter within the park. I absolutely loved the entrance for a part of the quarry you can walk into. It made me feel like I was stepping into a fantasy novel.

I also enjoyed waking around the park in general. It was a lovely stroll and there was a bonus of seeing a cat. Watch out! It bites!

I will admit I felt a buzz kill when we got to the big Greek amphitheater. They were in the process of covering the seats for a concert. It is really cool that it’s still being used for its original purpose, but I wanted to see the full view of the amphitheater in its 5th century BC Greek naked glory. I did manage zooming into a section they had not reached yet to see the original seats.

We kept walking and bonus! I did not realize this smaller Roman amphitheater was in the park. Immediate happiness! All in all, it was a great decision to visit this park. I encourage anyone interested in history to go for a visit.

We’re in the single digits ya’ll! Today I’ve enjoyed Fortnum and Mason’s Darjeeling FTGFOP. The ftgfop is a tea leaf grading of “Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe”; not “far too good for ordinary people”. It is considered the champagne of teas harvested in the foothills of the Himalayas on bushes more than a century old from the leaf tips.

Mmm mmm it is a smooth black tea with a beautiful musky floral finish. Happy 9 days until Christmas!
