This is the story of how a 6.4 mile hike outlined on the map below turned into an 8-9 mile hike:

I talked my coworker into going on a hike with me to Jug Bay Natural Area. We parked at the South St. Thomas Church Road Trailhead (Address: 15902 St Thomas Church Rd, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772).

We decided the red and green trails would be a good option to follow because it would be about 6.4 according to the map provided at the beginning of the trail. So we turned on the walking option on our watches to track the distance.

The trails started off a bit soggy since there’s been rain this week. Only a couple of times, our shoes sucked into the mud, but otherwise, it was easily passable.

I loved looking at the trees, but I had a favorite, which is pictured above.

We also had fun wildlife sightings, including a turtle, frogs, birds, and deer.

Somehow, the most fun we had was mushroom spotting. There were mushrooms of all colors and sizes. My particular favorite was the blue “Smurf” mushroom.

It was a really great hike, but it got to a point where we got worried we somehow took the wrong path. Our watches saw 6 miles go by then 7 and finally 8. We don’t think we did anything wrong, so we’ve decided the map’s miles were incorrect. Who knows…

We followed it up with some delicious Mexican food at Birrieria La Poblana in Upper Marlboro, MD. Huge thanks to these men for sticking it out with me!

I’m gonna soak in a hot bath now….
