Hike? #9: September 2025 Metro Richmond Zoo, VA

Okay, if I’m honest, I haven’t really completed the hikes I want every month this year. I can’t find hiking buddies, and it’s not safe to go alone. So I present to you the Metro Richmond Zoo.

My family and I took an impromptu trip to the Metro Richmond Zoo. Why? Because they announced the public can see 6 baby cheetahs! And if you know my kid, cheetahs are his favorite.

We’ve never been to this zoo, but at the end of the day, we had a new favorite. The animals were more active than any other zoo we’ve been to. In general, they seemed happy.

Part of that may be because visitors can buy animal food on the way into the zoo and feed the petting zoo animals, giraffes, flying birds, and ducks. My kid was particularly excited to feed the ducks.

To make the visit more exciting, there were baby animals all over! We’ve not been to a zoo with babies, and we got cuteness overload. I must have watched the baby cheetahs playing for over 15 minutes… with repeat visits.

There’s also an adult cheetah and dog who live together! Most importantly for our family, the zoo was not packed with visitors, and we were able to see everything within 1.5 miles of walking.

We loved how interactive the animals were and even had an audience for our walk out. So if you want a great animal experience on mostly flat land with shade, I highly recommend the Metro Richmond Zoo.
