Natural Sleep Remedies

Recently I have had trouble sleeping all the way through the night. I know some of my friends are also having this issue. So it got me thinking, “How can I sleep as well as my husband and his kitty?”

Most of us have probably heard that taking a melatonin supplement is helpful to snoozing. But what if you don’t want to take that or it isn’t working for you?

I recently heard that having some pistachios before bedtime can help you sleep. So what the hay, I tried it out. I had 1 cup before bed two nights in a row and can you believe it! I slept 4-6 hours without waking at all and ended up getting about 8-10 hours of sleep total. Now that could have been a coincidence, but it’s worthy of noting.

Being able to sleep well does depend on your melatonin levels and getting the proper vitamins and minerals into your body throughout the day. Here’s a list of helpful natural remedies that I have run across to try out:

1.) Tea (Chamomile, Valerian, Passion fruit, Peppermint)

2.) Pistachios, along with other nuts and seeds

3.) Grains (rice, barley, oats)

4.) Fruits (tart cherries, pomegranate, grapes, etc.)

5.) Vegetables (Corn, Tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli, cucumber, etc.)

6.) Warm milk/ Almond milk

7.) Tryptophan rich foods (turkey, chicken, seafood, beans, etc.)

8.) Magnesium rich foods (dark leafy greens, soybeans, avocados, etc.)

9.) Calcium rich foods (dairy, okra, cereals, etc.)

10.) Vitamin B6 rich foods (fish, meats, prunes, bananas, etc.)

But what if I don’t like any of these things?!

There is also the option of aromatherapy. Instead of eating or drinking things to help you sleep, you could fill your sleeping room with a scent that may help you get to dreamland. Some of the best sleepy scents are:

1.) Lavender

2.) Chamomile

3.) Bergamot Orange

4.) Jasmine

5.) Sandlewood

6.) Valerian Extract

7.) Juniper

8.) Frankincense

9.) Ravensara (also helpful with allergies and stuffy type illnesses)

10.) Lemon

These are just a few natural options I have come across to help get a full nights sleep. What are some remedies you have found that works?
